After days of brutal cold across the province—at times, more frigid than the North Pole—the temperatures have taken a toll on Alberta vehicles. Calls into AMA Roadside Assistance have been as high as eight times their usual volume, with as many as 600 rescue requests every half-hour. Rest assured, we’ve engaged every available dispatcher, call centre employee, service vehicle operator, and contracted partner to help as many members as possible, as quickly as possible. |
|
To help you navigate the final days of this deep freeze (not to mention the rest of winter!), here are our top tips for coping with severe cold as a driver.
- Plug in your vehicle (block heater) at -15°C and below.
- Avoid non-essential road travel.
- Ensure at least four to six seconds following distance.
- Keep a stocked emergency roadside kit.
- Keep your gas tank at least half-full.
- Ensure proper tire pressure and tread.
- Consider switching to synthetic oil.

But even with the best preparation, we know the unexpected can occur. If you find yourself broken down, we encourage you to get to a safe, warm place as soon as possible. You can also avoid phone queues by using AMA’s online Roadside Request form. Our tow operators continue to work round the clock, with emergency situations given priority to ensure everyone’s safety. We thank you, sincerely, for your patience and understanding during this busy time. |
